The Locum Tenens Provider of the Year award highlights the essential role locum tenens physicians and advanced practice providers play in delivering healthcare nationwide. To be eligible for this honor, providers must have dedicated at least three months over the past year to practicing medicine on a locum tenens basis within a major medical specialty.
Locumpedia received over 30 submissions for the second annual award. After a close review by an expert panel of locum tenens industry professionals, Dr. Afrooz and five other physicians were selected as winners.

Senior Physician Recruiter Barbara McCann nominated Dr. Afrooz because of his dedication to each assignment and willingness to go above and beyond for every patient.
From the outset, it was evident to McCann that Dr. Afrooz was driven by a profound dedication to his patients. From the first moment she spoke to Dr. Afrooz, she said his patient-first mindset was unmistakable. Dr. Afrooz began his medical career during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I found out he had just started his career in medicine three-and-a-half years ago, at the height of the pandemic,” McCann told Locumpedia. “That was a crazy time for all of us, and he decided to move to Fresno, California, as a hospitalist and work in what he called a ‘COVID hot zone.’”
Dr. Afrooz showed McCann that he would never be afraid to face challenges head-on. McCann recalled that he “wanted to deal with large, sick populations” and wouldn’t avoid a high-stress assignment.
While working with Interim, McCann explained how Dr. Afrooz set himself apart with his medical expertise, lack of ego, and profound connections with his patients. McCann said she regards him as one of the most “well-rounded physicians she has ever worked with,” adding that his approach to medicine is more than a profession—it is his calling.
